Saturday, August 30: EPL Matchweek 3 Highlights
Chelsea vs Fulham (2 – 0) | A London Derby Domination | EPL Matchweek 3
Club Reports: Chelsea | Fulham
Chelsea managed to score an easy victory of 2-0 over Fulham (their ongoing West London rivals), proving a more strategically refined side of the players as a team than in previous weeks. The Blues started strongly, controlling the game and making a few chances early on. Raheem Sterling opened the scoring with a great solo effort by cutting inside and unleashing a powerful shot past the Fulham goalkeeper. Kai Havertz contributed to the team’s score by doubling the score before halftime, by tapping in from close range. It was a well-worked team effort no doubt.
While Fulham demonstrated their offensive strengths, they struggled to overcome Chelsea’s organized defense. They had some chances to score, but they weren’t very good at it in the last third. Chelsea did a good job of managing the game in the second half, stopping Fulham from getting a foothold and winning with fairly ease.
Crucial moments of the match:
- Raheem Sterling was dubbed the best player on the pitch, not just for his goal but for his constant threat and creativity down the wing in the field.
- Chelsea’s backline looked much more stable, which kept Fulham from getting too many good chances. It was clear that Thiago Silva had a lot of expertise.
- Chelsea mostly dominated the midfield duel, which gave them control over the pace of the game.
- Despite their efforts, Fulham couldn’t find a way past a determined Chelsea defense and lacked a cutting edge, one of the most well-planned games in EPL!
Manager Quotes
Graham Potter (Chelsea) – “I’m pleased with the performance. We showed good intensity and created chances. Raheem was excellent, and the clean sheet is always important. There are still areas to improve, but this is a step in the right direction.”
Analytical note: Potter’s remarks are centered into keeping the spirits held high and just touching upon the side that needs improvement. This optimism keeps the team’s morale from swirling down affecting the team’s strengths.
Marco Silva (Fulham) – “It was a tough game against a very good side. We started well in moments, but their quality showed. We need to be more clinical in front of goal and learn from this experience. The fight is there, but we need more quality in key moments.”
Analytical note: Marco tried to highlight the strategic side of the opponent’s team while hinting the weakness of his own team in a subtle enough manner that it does not sway the team in negativity and he was careful not to disregard the team’s efforts early in the game.

Manchester United vs Burnley (3-2) | Red Devils Edge OUt Clarets | EPL Matchweek 3
Club Reports: Man Utd | Burnley
Manchester United won the game by just one point as it was a close battle. Meanwhile, Burnley also gave in a lot of effort and fight, even though the match was at United’s home ground, Old Trafford. United started off on the right note by showing their attacking intent. However, Bruno Fernandes kept his head in the game and scored the first goal with a very efficient, precise shot.
Nevertheless, team United was able to regain their lead before halftime when Marcus Rashford emerged from the left and delivered a mind-blowing shot that directly landed in the net. The second half shifted the spotlight to United again thanks to our very own Antony, who finished neatly after a swift counterattack. Burnley, however, still fought back and managed a score back to the team through a penalty from Jay Rodriguez, this was a stressful and uncertain ending. United held on to secure the three points.
Crucial moments of the match:
- Team United showed their well-strategized side and made 3 goals that showcased United’s offensive talent.
- Team Burnley showed great character to rise in the game twice and then score late on, refusing to give up without giving a fair fight.
- Both teams lacked defensive strategies that resulted in the goals on either side.
- Bruno Fernandes became central to United’s attacking side, scoring and creating opportunities.
Manager Quotes
Erik ten Hag (Man Utd) – “Pleased with the win, but we made it harder for ourselves than it needed to be. We scored good goals, but we need to be more consistent and defensive. We showed resilience, but we must improve.”
Analytical note: Erik criticised the team for making the game harder for themselves but is pleased that they managed to come out of the struggle as winners. The crowd too swayed with the team’s on-field action. And the manager’s insights spoke of the unnecessary stress the fans had to go through as well. However, on the other hand the Cheers after the winning goal for United were loud and proud.
Vincent Kompan (Burnley) – “I’m proud of the effort and character we showed. To come to Old Trafford and score two goals against a team like United speaks volumes. We’re learning, and we’re getting closer. The margins are small at this level.”
Analytical note: Kompany stayed encouraging for the team and focused on the bright side that lifted the disheartened players and fans both in a much needed moment.
Sunderland vs Brentford (2 – 1) | The Black Cats Roar Back | EPL Matchweek 3
Club Reports: Sunderland | Brentford
Sunderland played this match in high spirits in the beginning that became their historic comeback victory against Brentford in an exciting game at the Stadium of Light. Brentford took the lead in the first half through a strategic and well-placed header from Ivan Toney, silencing the home crowd. The Bees appeared to show their composed side during intense moments early in the match, moving the ball well and creating opportunities.
On the contrary, what became the reason for striking the single goal for Brentford was the genuine home support advantage they had with the crowd who refused to give up on their team.
Crucial moments of the match:
- It was a fantastic display of character to come back from a goal down against a strong Brentford side in this thrilling game.
- Ivan Toney was a constant challenge for Brentford with his ever-famous aerial skills and hold-up play.
- Jack Clarke was like a catalyst in Sunderland’s comeback; his goal was itself a testament to his individual skill.
- The Stadium of Light crowd proved to be a major factor in lifting their team’s spirit when they needed it the most.
Manager Quotes
Tony Mowbray (Sunderland) – “Incredible character from the team. We went behind against a very good Brentford team, but we never stopped believing. The fans were immense; they carried us through. Jack Clarke’s goal was fantastic, and Ross showed great composure for the winner.”
Analytical note: Tony beamed at the sight of his players while also sparing a moment to appreciate the opponent team of Brentford for putting up a good fight against them. He seemed to be recalling how when team Sunderland had scored the winning goal, the Stadium of Light exploded with a guttural roar, almost like the fireworks of celebration had erupted with exciting chants by the fans.
Thomas Frank (Brentford) – “Disappointing result. We controlled much of the first half and should have gone in with a bigger lead. We knew Sunderland would come back strong, and we didn’t deal with their pressure well enough. We need to be more ruthless when we are on top.”
Analytical note: Frank decided to take a reality check at this moment to inspire the team to focus on improving their weak points. While pointing out how they were on top of their game in the first half of the game that should have been maintained.
Tottenham vs Bournemouth (0-1) | Cherries Shock Spurs | EPL Matchweek 3
Club Reports: Tottenham | Bournemouth
Bournemouth pulled off a significant move, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in their home stadium at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Spurs, despite creating numerous chances, were left frustrated by an incredible Bournemouth defense and an strategic goalkeeping performance.
The decisive moment came in the second half when Philip Billing maneuvered a powerful long-range strike that nestled in the back of the net, which left the Spurs’ defense and goalkeeper by surprise. Tottenham did try their best to look for an equalizer, even by throwing everything at the Bournemouth goal, but they couldn’t find a way through since their strategy was not good enough according to the need of the hour. Their shots were blocked, headers went wide, and the crossbar was rattled, but the goal remained elusive. Bournemouth held firm, defending bravely and earning a hard-fought three points. This was a game that had the crowd on the edge of their seats throughout.
Crucial moments of the match:
- The Cherries proved their skill of disciplined defending and counter-attacking football.
- A moment of individual brilliance secured the win for Bournemouth.
- Tottenham lacked a clinical edge in front of goal and thus led the entire team to suffer for not converting their chances.
- Neto in the Bournemouth goal made several crucial saves to keep his side in the lead; a key strategic move by an individual player resulting in an incredible win for the team.
Manager Quotes
Ange Postecoglou of Tottenham erupted: “Disappointing result, obviously. We created enough to win, but we weren’t clinical. We need to be more ruthless in the final third. We will learn from this; it’s a part of the process. Credit to Bournemouth, they defended well.”
Analytical note: Ange erupted out on his team which is understandable as the team was so close to win but lack of improvising the strategies had cost them the game. We can relate to such clear remarks as even the Tottenham fans were initially optimistic of their team’s win, cheering for them early on in the game. However, as the game unwrapped, murmurs of frustration began among the fans that were put into words by the manager himself.
Andoni Iraola of Bournemouth exclaimed with satsifaction: “A fantastic effort from the team. We knew it would be tough, but the players stuck to the plan, defended together, and showed great spirit. To get three points here is huge for us. Billing’s goal was magnificent.”
Analytical note: Iraola came from a place of immense satisfaction with his team and praised their courage to not lose sight of their target amidst the chaos and pressure.

However, Wolves again fought back, with Hee-chan Hwang scoring a well-taken goal to maintain its lead once again.. Just when it looked like the points would be shared, Everton grabbed a late winner. - Coming from behind twice then scoring a late goal.
- Even though they lost, Wolves demonstrated their ability to bounce back and continue the game and score.
- Both teams will be looking at their defensive strategic lackings as they gave up a lot of goals.
Manager Quotes
Gary O’Neil (Wolves) – “Devastating to lose like that after twice coming back. We showed good attacking intent and scored two good goals, but we need to be better defensively in crucial moments. It’s a tough one to take.”
Analytical note: Gary was justifiably disappointed as they came so close to winning and then miss the title with just a score would have its toll on any team. On the fan’s side the last-minute score from Everton plunged the home crowd into despair, a collective sigh of disbelief and frustration.
Sean Dyche (Everton) — “Massive three points for us. To score three goals away from home and show that never-say-die attitude is huge. We kept going and deserved the winner. Still work to do, but the desire is there.”
Analytical note: Sean rejoiced at the moment, seemed proud of his boys to have scored 3 goals with a beautiful onfield strategy. But he also added a pointer to keep the boys grounded for future competitions to come. This was a gist in itself of what the electrifying crowd of Everton fans were experiencing.
Leeds United vs Newcastle (0 – 0) | Stalemate at Elland Road | EPL Matchweek 3
Club Reports: Leeds | Newcastle
Although Leeds United and Newcastle United played out a goalless draw match, it was a fiercely contested encounter at Elland Road. It wouldn’t be wrong to conclude that both these teams had their chances to score, but neither of the sides was able to avail themselves of their chances. The game unwrapped with Leeds starting off with high intensity, putting pressure on Newcastle. They created a few opportunities that were not clear-cut but dangerous, where Newcastle’s goalkeeper Nick Pope made good saves and blocked the opponent team from making a single score.
Newcastle picked up the momentum later in the game but faced a matching defense strategy by the opponent team. The second half saw the game open up slightly, with end-to-end action, but both defenses held firm. Despite late efforts from both sides, the goalkeepers and defensive units canceled each other out, ensuring the points were shared in a hard-fought draw.
Crucial moments of the match:
- Both defenses, particularly their goalkeepers, were in excellent form.
- The match was played at a frantic pace, reflecting the rivalry and highlighting again the strengths of each team’s goalkeepers who played their parts well.
- Both teams must be regretting not having availed at least one of their opportunities.
- The midfield was a constant battleground, not giving a break to either of the sides.
Manager Quotes
Jesse Marsch (Leeds United) – “A tough, intense game. We created good chances, but we lacked that final touch. I’m proud of the effort and energy, but we wanted three points at home. We defended well, though, and a clean sheet against a good Newcastle side is a positive.”
Analytical note: Jesse admitted that the team created potential chances for scoring but it lacked the strategic perfection to actually score a goal. Similarly Leeds fans were incredibly supportive of their team too, urging them forward with relentless chanting and roaring every time they got the chance to score.
Eddie Howe (Newcastle) – “A fair result in the end, I think. Elland Road is a difficult place to come, and we had to be defensively solid, which we were. We created some good moments, but it just didn’t fall for us in front of goal. We’ll take the point.”
Analytical note: Howe added a spin of positivity to the game by shifting the focus from the players to the place and not discouraging the team altogether. This statement helped to uplift and praised the players for being solid defensively, it also gave the crowd something focus to take from the ground from their team. It minimized the effect of the final whistle that had brought both a mix of muted applause for the effort and some disappointment at not securing a goal at all. Predictable, right?

Analytical note: Emery erupted on his team as he wasn’t expecting a clean sheet from the players after all the intense hours of training that had gone into specifically for this day. The strategy was weak and so was the defence with the players not having their head in the game in this match. Everyone at the game was left furious and expects the players not to continue such a frivolous attitude in the game.
Patrick Vieira of Crystal Palace seemed at peace – “Fantastic performance from the team. We were solid defensively, clinical in attack, and showed great character. To come to Villa Park and win 3-0 is a testament to the hard work the players are putting in. Eberechi was outstanding.”
Analytical note: Patrick on the other hand was obviously in a completely different zone with his team and appreciated their efforts, unity and execution of strategy by the players.
